CV Tips
Every job seeker knows that their CV is their greatest tool when venturing down a new career path.Every job seeker knows that their CV is their greatest tool when venturing down a new career path. Yet, according to a recent report, statistics show a large number of applicants are failing to tailor their CV effectively, losing them the job. In today’s fiercely competitive job market it’s essential for your CV to be up to scratch to win over those all important employers! Here at MLV, recruiters have seen everything from dodgy translations to inappropriate interests, so here are a few tips to follow when mastering the perfect CV.
- First and foremost tailor your CV - Different job roles require different skills so in order to gain employer’s attention be sure to identify and highlight areas of your work experience and qualifications, as well as personal interests which are relevant to the position being applied for. Read over the job specification and requirements thoroughly and gather as much information as possible before applying in order to target your CV much more effectively and succinctly. Employers are neither interested nor impressed by your hobbies of socialising or Netflix binges.
- Be concise - Try not to waffle, employers will appreciate conciseness as oppose to long lists of clichés and qualities which have been mentioned thousands of times before!
- Be unique - This is your chance to shine and show off your most impressive qualities and achievements so use it to your full advantage! In line with point number 2, avoid clichés and back up your qualities with clear and meaningful examples which you believe make you an ideal candidate.
- Make use of grammar and spell checkers - As obvious as it may sound, pay careful attention to your computer grammar and spell checker when typing your CV as the slightest error or typo could make you appear unfocused or careless, which will inevitably put employers off. If writing in another language, be very careful with using online translation tools which can often be far too literal, leaving employers puzzled, amused and completely lost in translation…
- Format correctly - Remember quality not quantity! One or two full pages is an ideal length and should allow you plenty of room to include all your relevant information efficiently. Structure your CV neatly, clearly and chronologically, perhaps including bullet points for key points and white borders around paragraphs to ensure it’s easy to read, as well as concise. Fancy fonts and WordArt won’t impress employers!
Good luck and happy CV writing!
